What is off-label drug use?

Off-label drug use refers to prescribing a medication for a purpose that is not officially approved by the FDA. It is legal and common for physicians to prescribe a drug for an off-label use when it is determined to be medically appropriate. In fact, according to the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, one in five prescriptions today are for off-label use.
